We now offer the o-ring sets in 2 different materials: Standard Buna-N (Nitrile) and EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer). What's the difference between Buna and EPDM?

Buna-N

Buna-N (also called Nitrile or NBR) is a type of rubber that's often used in hoses, gaskets and seals for food processing equipment. Think of it as a stretchy, super durable material that can handle contact with most things you'd find in the kitchen. While it's a workhorse in food processing, Buna-N does have a few limitations. It's not a big fan of strong cleaners, so avoid harsh chemicals with acids or peroxides. It also prefers moderate temperatures and shouldn't be exposed to extreme heat or cold. Finally, Buna-N isn't the best choice for environments with ozone, a gas you might encounter around electrical sparks or strong sunlight. But for most everyday food processing tasks, Buna-N is a reliable and versatile material.

EPDM

EPDM (say it like "ep-dum") is another type of rubber commonly used in food processing equipment. If Buna-N is great for most kitchen temperatures, EPDM is like its super-temperature-resistant cousin. It can handle both hot water and steam up to 275°F, and stay flexible even in freezing conditions down to -55°F. Think of it as super tough - it resists scratches, wear and tear, and even harsh outdoor elements like sunlight and ozone. EPDM is also happy with most cleaning solutions, including acids, alkalis, and alcohols, as long as they're not too strong. There are a couple of things to remember though: EPDM isn't a big fan of oil-based products, and it can be a bit more expensive than Buna-N. But for its impressive temperature range and durability, EPDM is a great choice for many food processing needs.
