When it comes to serving cold brew coffee, you'll find that you have many options when it comes to purchasing a tap (faucet). Taps/faucets come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and variations so its important that you know what you're looking for when purchasing a faucet to serve your cold brew coffee.
Cold brew coffee can be served out of any type of faucet, however nitro coffee will require a specific type of tap/faucet, commonly known in the beer world as a "stout faucet". What's the difference between a standard faucet and a stout faucet (nitro tap)? The biggest difference is that stout faucets have what is called a restrictor plate where standard faucets have nothing that restrict the flow of liquid. It's the restrictor plate that turns properly nitrogenated cold brew coffee into nitro coffee. The restrictor plate, also known as an agitator plate, agitates the nitrogen (and also CO2 in the case of beer) as the liquid flows through the faucet. This agitation creates micro bubbles and that is what gives us the famous "nitro pour", "cascade effect".
